About Me
Following eleven years as Executive Director of the Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC), I am currently Chair of the Birmingham Hippodrome, providing Executive Support at the Old Vic Theatre in London, and developing my Arts Leadership and Cultural Sector Consultancy business.
I started my career in the arts as a Founder Member, Administrator and Composer at Big Wheel Theatre Company, a Theatre in Education Company. I then spent five years in the City of London as an Arbitrage Trader and Credit Analyst, and then undertook a year as an Arts Council England bursary holder in Arts Administration. I have been General Manager of the Towngate Theatre, Basildon, Manager of the Screen at Walton-on-Thames and spent six years as General Manager of The Oxford Playhouse.
The next six years of my career were as General Manager and Interim Head of Arts and Theatres at Reading Borough Council, managing the Hexagon, the Town Hall Concert Hall, 21 South Street Arts Centre and the WOMAD festival. I then moved to the Southbank Centre, London, where I spent seven years as Director of Operations and Deputy Chief Executive. I moved from the Southbank Centre to the RSC.
I was awarded a CBE in the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee list, was granted an Honorary Doctor of Letters by the University of Warwick, and am an Honorary Fellow of St John’s College, University of Oxford.
Over the years I have served on various Boards and Advisory Councils, and they appear in the timeline below.
